Diane and I visited Coastal Maine in September 2013.  After landing in Portland, Maine, and renting our van, we headed out with Diane driving and me navigating.  It wasn't long before we stopped at the first roadside stand for a lobster roll.  We visited the LL Bean Stores and Wolfe's Neck State Park in Freeport.  From Freeport, we began a long day with stops at Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid Point to our destination of Bar Harbor.  The next week was spent touring Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and other parts of Mt. Desert Island.   I went for sunrises - Cadillac Mountain (Diane actually got up for only this one) Seal Beach, and Otter Point -  and sunsets - Cadillac Mountain, Pretty Marsh, and Otter Point. This was a fabulous area with shopping, strolls along the Shore Path in Bar Harbor and Ocean Trail in Acadia, and many other beautiful sights.

From Bar Harbor, we went to Camden.  Be sure to take a cruise on the schooner "Surprise" and the Hawthorn Inn is a great place to stay. The harbor at Camden is fabulous. Camden is a good base of operation to see all the sights in Rockport and Rockland also.

The next stop was Portland. The downtown area is nice.  Right on the harbor with lots of things going on - cruise ships, sailboats, restaurants and nice walking area along the docks.  Portland is a good base of operation to explore southern Maine.  We visited Kennebunkport, Kittery, York, and Cape Neddick.  All were close enough to spend the day driving and sightseeing in time to make it back to Portland easily.  Our personal favorite in this area was at the end of Two Lights Road where there is a restaurant called "The Lobster Shack" with great views of the Atlantic Ocean and really good food.
